Saint Mary’s Day (October 11th)
Although it is a religious celebration, nowadays it is known as “txikiteros” day. “Txikiteros” are wine drinkers who go from bar to bar singing traditional songs. Times are changing, and young people do not do that from long ago, but there are still some of these old men who keep the tradition, especially on that day.
So, the 11th of October, people from all around the region gather in front of Yohn’s Palace, in the Old Quarter, and praise Saint Mary –this is the only place in the Old Quarter where Saint Mary’s Basilica can be seen-. Then a procession begins, from bar to bar, drinking some wine and singing old times songs.
